THIS IS A STORY I WROTE FOR THE FOURTH BOOK OUR SCHOOL HAS PUBLISHED. FRANKLY THIS IS A TOPIC I AM VERY SENSITIVE ABOUT SO I HOPE YOU'LL LIKE IT AND PERHAPS CONTEMPLATE IT FOR A WHILE.

KENYA

Sudan was the oldest and the wisest from the family. He was always the one to rely on, a proper head of the family. When his family still lived in Kenya all of the youngest would come to him and ask him questions about his life and he would always reply with patience and love. The whole family lived in Kenya until the very last of the youngest was killed by poachers. They were the last White Northern Rhinos on Earth and they were three in total. For Sudan it was super important to protect his remaining family members even though he knew they were already lost. Sudan was the last male, then there were two females, Najin and Fatu. After their children were killed by the poachers Najin and Fatu lost their will to live completely. Well it was on Sudan to try and save the situation.

He decided to set off from their shelter and find help. He told Najin who was a little older than Fatu, to look after her and find as much mud to keep them cold and damp. It was extremely crucial for them to keep their bodies from that fatal drought and warmth of Kenya. So Sudan wrapped himself in dirt and set off. It took him over three days to get to the village which he knew to be of the protectors. He didn’t know how he was going to talk to that people but he knew he couldn’t let another member of his family cross over to the other side. Luckily there was a young man standing in front of an iron gate. Sudan got frightened at first because the protector-guy was holding a gun but right after he remembered that that was what they had to do to be able to guard the Rhinos. The man gave notice of Sudan and looked a little taken aback. ,,What is he doing here? ‘' The man started screaming ,,We found him! He’s here!’’ Sudan got frightened and came to a sudden halt. The guardian started walking very slowly towards Sudan. He looked kind and unexperienced but for some reason very stout-hearted. He got very close to Sudan and as people are used to, even though they know animals don’t speak the same language, started talking to him in a hushed voice. ,,We are going to help you Sudan, how come you’re here alone? Where are your companions?’' Sudan understood and knew that everything was going to be good from now on.

ZOO DVŮR KRÁLOVÉ

Sudan, Najin and Fatu were lying on the ground exhausted. The journey took about twenty hours, it is very complicated to travel with animals of such a measurement. They were taken to Czech Republic to be preserved and protected as they were the last Northern White Rhinos alive.

They spent most of the rest of their life in this particular zoo. But what happened to them at last? The last remaining Northern White Rhinos?

RHINOS BACK HOME

It took several years for Sudan and his two companions to settle in. It was different to live in such a tiny little world, everything was smaller and also more artificial. Despite that they were the happiest they had been in a very long time. Very sadly though, Sudan got sick. He was old and already way less strong and fierce than he had been in Africa. He didn’t really have a severe disease that people would be able to solve, it was just an old man dying. The person who owned the zoo had to decide really quick. It wasn’t an easy thing to decide but finally he came to a decision to send Rhinos back home. He knew Sudan was dying and it felt right to be able to provide him a place to die in that felt like home.

Sudan died in Kenya, he was the last male of this specie - that basically means that the Northern White Rhinos are now extinct. The irony of it all is that he died protected by people, when it was humankind who caused his suffering in the first place. There is a lot of poor people in Africa, who have families to feed too. It is hard to fight an issue of poaching when there is not enough work for people to get money from. It all starts with a very low job offer which then causes people searching for money in a different manner, which in our case is poaching. I understand that we might think that there is not much we can do about it, but at least being informed and educated is an important step towards making our world safer not only for people but also for other living creatures.
